The Cafe

A Cafe in Banbury Town Centre: The Coffee at Blossom

If you're after a good cafe in Banbury town centre, this is us saying hello. Blossom is an independent cafe on South Bar Street, a few minutes' walk from Banbury Cross, the shops and the station. We open at 8am every day, we serve locally roasted coffee and homemade cake, and yes, there's a pottery painting studio attached. But you really don't need a paintbrush in your hand to come in for a coffee. Plenty of people never touch one, and we love them just the same.

The coffee bar at Blossom cafe in Banbury: espresso machine, grinder full of beans, stacked pink and sage takeaway cups, and a bag of Oxford Coffee Company Fazenda beans on the oak counter
Our coffee bar on South Bar Street. The pink cups are for taking away, though we won't stop you sitting down with one.

The coffee

We chose our beans with a lot of care and a fair amount of tasting. Our coffee comes from The Oxford Coffee Company, an independent roaster here in Oxfordshire, and our house espresso is their Fazenda blend from Brazil. It's smooth and chocolatey rather than sharp, the kind of coffee that's easy to drink slowly, which suits a place where people tend to linger. It makes a lovely flat white, and it holds its own as a latte, cappuccino, americano or long black. Oat milk is always in the fridge, and everything can be made to take away.

Not a coffee drinker? We've got you

The counter isn't only about espresso. We keep a proper range of teas, from builder's-strength breakfast tea to herbal and fruit blends, and we make a rich hot chocolate that's become a bit of a favourite with the younger painters. There's matcha, made properly, and for warmer days a menu of iced drinks along with soft drinks and juices for anyone who'd rather. Whatever's in your cup, it comes in one of our nice mugs, or a pink or sage takeaway cup if you're on the move.

The cake

The cakes are homemade and the selection changes through the week, so it's worth a look at the counter when you arrive. There's usually a chocolate option, something with fruit in it, and a gluten-free choice. We're a cafe rather than a restaurant, so think coffee and cake or a light bite rather than a full lunch. If you're painting with us, the £5 studio fee includes a drink or a slice of cake for every painter, so your first cup is on us.

Somewhere to settle in

We've tried to make Blossom the sort of place you'd want to stay a while. It's calm, it's warm, the tables are big and the chairs are comfortable. In the mornings especially it's a lovely spot to open a laptop and get some work done with a coffee at your elbow. It works just as well for a long catch-up with a friend, or a quiet hour with a book. And we'll gently suggest that a coffee here makes a nicer first date than most: there's something to look at, something to talk about, and if the conversation is going well, a pottery session is right there for round two. Dogs are welcome, too.

Coming in just for coffee

The cafe opens at 8am every day. Pottery painting sessions run from 10am onwards, so the mornings are quiet cafe hours, and throughout the day you're welcome to sit with a drink whether or not you're painting. Nobody will hand you a brush unless you ask for one.

Getting here

You'll find us at The Studio, Rear Office, 18 S Bar St, Banbury OX16 9AF, right in the town centre. There's no parking at the cafe itself, but the town car parks are all within a minute or two on foot, and Banbury station is a short walk away. We're open 8am to 5pm, seven days a week.

The pottery, if you're curious

You pick a piece from the shelves, paint it at one of our tables, and we glaze and fire it for you to collect about a week later. Our first-visit guide covers how it works and what it costs, you can book a session online in about a minute, or get in touch with any questions. Or just come in for the coffee. That's what it's there for.
